A Physical Oceanographer studies the physical processes of the ocean, such as currents, waves, tides, and temperature distribution. Their day can involve fieldwork at sea, deploying and recovering instruments, analyzing large datasets from satellites and sensors, and developing numerical models to predict ocean behavior.
- Plan and participate in oceanographic field expeditions to collect data.
- Deploy, maintain, and recover oceanographic instruments (e.g., CTDs, ADCPs, buoys).
- Analyze large datasets from satellite imagery, autonomous underwater vehicles, and in-situ sensors.
- Develop and run numerical models to simulate ocean currents, climate patterns, and sea-level rise.
- Prepare scientific reports, publications, and presentations on research findings.
- Collaborate with marine biologists, geologists, and climate scientists.
- Utilize GIS and remote sensing techniques for spatial data analysis.
Work Environment
