About This Role
Designs industrial systems to mass-produce plant-based proteins, enzymes, or pharmaceutical compounds.
A Day in the Life
A Plant Bio-process Engineer designs, optimizes, and scales up industrial processes for producing plant-derived products. This involves developing bioreactor systems, optimizing fermentation conditions, troubleshooting production issues, and ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.
- Design and optimize bioreactor systems for plant cell culture or microbial fermentation using plant feedstocks
- Develop and scale up downstream processing methods for product purification
- Monitor and control process parameters (temperature, pH, nutrient levels) to maximize yield
- Troubleshoot production issues and implement corrective actions
- Conduct economic feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for new processes
- Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and safety regulations
- Collaborate with R&D scientists to translate lab-scale processes to industrial scale
- Prepare technical reports, process documentation, and standard operating procedures (SOPs)
Work Environment
Works in a mix of office settings for design and analysis, and industrial plant environments or pilot facilities for process implementation and monitoring. May involve exposure to industrial machinery and controlled environments.
