A Day in the Life
A Plant Biotechnologist/Geneticist spends their day in the lab and sometimes in the field, designing and conducting experiments to modify plant genetics. This involves molecular biology techniques, tissue culture, data analysis, and collaborating with other scientists to develop improved crop varieties.
- Design and execute experiments for genetic modification and gene editing in plants
- Perform molecular biology techniques such as DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, sequencing, and gene cloning
- Conduct plant tissue culture for regeneration of genetically modified plants
- Analyze genetic data using bioinformatics tools and statistical software
- Develop and optimize protocols for plant transformation and regeneration
- Collaborate with plant breeders, pathologists, and agronomists on research projects
- Maintain detailed records of experiments, results, and protocols
- Prepare research reports, scientific publications, and grant proposals
Work Environment
