A Plant Molecular Breeder combines traditional plant breeding with molecular biology techniques. Their day involves designing crosses, evaluating progeny in fields or greenhouses, performing molecular marker analysis in the lab, and analyzing genetic data to select superior plant varieties.
- Design and implement plant breeding programs for crop improvement
- Conduct field and greenhouse trials to evaluate new plant varieties
- Perform molecular marker analysis (e.g., SSR, SNP) to identify desirable traits
- Analyze genetic data to make informed selection decisions
- Manage and maintain breeding populations and germplasm collections
