A Day in the Life
A Product Design Engineer transforms conceptual ideas into tangible, manufacturable products. Their day involves sketching, creating detailed 3D CAD models, performing simulations, selecting materials, and collaborating with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are optimized for production efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Translate conceptual sketches and requirements into detailed 3D CAD models
- Apply 'Design for Manufacturing' (DFM) and 'Design for Assembly' (DFA) principles
- Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or other simulations to validate designs
- Select appropriate materials based on functional requirements, cost, and manufacturability
- Create technical drawings, specifications, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
- Collaborate with industrial designers, marketing, and manufacturing teams
- Build and test prototypes to validate design concepts and identify issues
- Iterate on designs based on testing feedback, manufacturing constraints, and cost targets
- Research new technologies, materials, and manufacturing processes
Work Environment
Primarily an office-based role, working at a computer with specialized software. The environment is often collaborative, involving meetings with cross-functional teams. May include occasional visits to workshops or factories for prototyping and manufacturing oversight.
