A Day in the Life
A Radiopharmacist's day is centered around the preparation, quality control, and dispensing of radioactive drugs for patient use in nuclear medicine. This involves strict adherence to sterile compounding techniques, radiation safety, and regulatory compliance, ensuring patients receive safe and effective radiopharmaceuticals.
- Compound and dispense radiopharmaceuticals for diagnostic imaging (e.g., PET, SPECT) and therapeutic applications.
- Perform rigorous quality control tests on all prepared radiopharmaceuticals to ensure purity, potency, and sterility.
- Calibrate and maintain radiopharmacy equipment, including dose calibrators and radiation detection devices.
- Manage inventory of radioactive materials and ensure proper storage and disposal of radioactive waste.
- Provide consultation to nuclear medicine physicians and technologists on radiopharmaceutical properties and administration.
- Ensure strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Radiopharmacy Practices (GRP), and radiation safety regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of all compounding, dispensing, and quality control activities.
- Participate in research and development of new radiopharmaceutical formulations or processes.
