A Day in the Life
A Taxonomist / Herbarium Curator spends their day identifying, classifying, and documenting plant species. This involves meticulous examination of plant specimens, conducting field research to collect new samples, managing and preserving herbarium collections, and contributing to scientific publications and educational outreach.
- Identify and classify plant specimens using morphological, molecular, and ecological data
- Conduct field expeditions to collect new plant samples and ecological data
- Prepare, mount, and label plant specimens for long-term preservation in the herbarium
- Manage and maintain the herbarium collection, ensuring proper storage and accessibility
- Digitize collection data and contribute to botanical databases
- Conduct research on plant evolution, biogeography, and conservation
- Write scientific papers, reports, and contribute to botanical guides
- Provide expertise for educational programs and public inquiries
Work Environment
