A Day in the Life
An Urban Agriculturalist / Farm Manager designs, implements, and oversees high-tech farming systems within urban environments. This includes managing hydroponic, aeroponic, aquaponic, or vertical farms, ensuring optimal crop growth, resource efficiency, and market readiness for fresh produce in cities.
- Design and set up urban farming systems (hydroponics, vertical farms, rooftop gardens).
- Monitor and control environmental parameters (temperature, humidity, light, CO2) in controlled environments.
- Manage nutrient delivery systems and water quality for hydroponic/aquaponic setups.
- Oversee planting, cultivation, pest management, and harvesting operations.
- Analyze crop data and adjust growing protocols for optimal yield and quality.
- Manage farm staff, including training and scheduling.
- Develop and manage budgets, inventory, and supply chain for farm inputs.
- Identify market opportunities and manage sales/distribution of urban produce.
Work Environment
Work takes place in controlled indoor environments (vertical farms, greenhouses) or on rooftops/urban plots. It's a mix of hands-on farming, technical system management, and administrative tasks. The environment is often innovative and fast-paced.
