A Day in the Life
A Water Quality Specialist (Hatchery) dedicates their day to meticulously managing the delicate chemical balance of water in fish hatcheries. This involves continuous monitoring of parameters like pH, ammonia, dissolved oxygen, and temperature, and promptly adjusting conditions to ensure the survival and healthy development of sensitive fish larvae and fry.
- Conducting daily water quality tests for pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and temperature.
- Monitoring fish larvae and fry for signs of stress, disease, or abnormal behavior.
- Adjusting water parameters through aeration, filtration, water changes, or chemical treatments.
- Maintaining and calibrating water quality testing equipment and hatchery systems.
- Recording and analyzing water quality data to identify trends and potential issues.
- Implementing biosecurity protocols to prevent disease introduction and spread.
- Collaborating with aquaculture technicians and veterinarians on fish health management.
- Ensuring compliance with environmental regulations and best aquaculture practices.
