About This Role
Designs the visual look of films, teledramas, and commercials — lighting, camera placement, lens choice, and colour palette. Sri Lankan DPs work on local films, teledramas, and increasingly on Sri Lanka-shot scenes in Indian films (Kollywood, Bollywood use Sri Lanka as a shooting location). HNDA Fine Arts or SLITHM film studies are common entry paths.
A Day in the Life
A Cinematographer's day involves meticulous planning, from scouting locations and testing equipment to collaborating with the director on shot lists. On set, it's a fast-paced environment managing camera and lighting crews, ensuring every frame aligns with the visual narrative.
- Collaborate with the director to understand the visual style and mood of the project
- Scout locations to assess lighting conditions and camera angles
- Select appropriate cameras, lenses, and lighting equipment
- Oversee the setup and operation of cameras and lighting on set
- Direct the camera and lighting crews
- Manage the visual continuity and quality of all shots
- Conduct test shoots and review dailies (raw footage)
- Participate in post-production color grading sessions
Work Environment
Work takes place on diverse sets, from indoor studios to outdoor locations, often under varying weather conditions. It's a dynamic, collaborative, and sometimes high-pressure environment, requiring quick problem-solving and technical precision.
