Manage hotel operations, oversee staff, ensure guest satisfaction, maintain quality standards, and drive profitability.
A Day in the Life
Oversee all operations of a hotel property in Sri Lanka — managing departments, driving guest satisfaction, controlling costs, and delivering revenue targets across rooms, food & beverage, and events.
- Review overnight reports (occupancy, RevPAR, guest complaints) each morning
- Chair daily operations briefing with HODs (housekeeping, F&B, front office, maintenance)
- Walk through public areas and guest rooms for quality inspection
- Review financial performance against monthly budgets and forecast variances
- Handle escalated guest complaints and service recovery
- Liaise with sales team on group bookings, weddings, and corporate accounts
- Monitor online reviews (TripAdvisor, Booking.com) and direct response actions
- Conduct staff performance reviews and attend HR disciplinary proceedings
Work Environment
Sri Lanka's hotel sector ranges from boutique properties in Ella and Galle to large 5-star city hotels in Colombo. Managers work across Jetwing, Cinnamon (JKH), Aitken Spence, and international chains (Hilton, Shangri-La, Marriott). The role blends guest-facing leadership with financial management in an industry still recovering from 2019 and 2022 shocks.
Typical hours: 55h/week · WLB score 4/10 · COMMON overtime
Hotel management demands significant time — weekends are peak periods, not rest days. On-call duty is normal. Resort properties offer better work-life balance but require relocation.
