A Day in the Life
An Industrial Relations Officer (IRO) primarily focuses on managing the relationship between management and employees, especially concerning trade unions and collective bargaining. A typical day involves engaging with union representatives, interpreting labour laws, mediating disputes, and preparing for or attending Labour Tribunal hearings.
- Engage in collective bargaining negotiations with trade unions (e.g., CFTU, NWC) to establish and renew collective agreements.
- Interpret and apply Sri Lankan labour laws, including the Termination of Employment of Workmen Act (TEWA) and Shop & Office Employees Act.
- Advise management on industrial relations strategies and best practices.
- Investigate and resolve industrial disputes, grievances, and disciplinary matters.
- Represent the company in Labour Tribunal proceedings and conciliation meetings.
- Develop and implement industrial relations policies and procedures.
- Monitor the industrial climate and identify potential areas of conflict.
- Conduct training for managers on labour law compliance and union relations.
Work Environment
Works in an office environment, often within the HR department, but frequently travels to factory floors, plantation sites, or Labour Tribunals. The role is often high-pressure, requiring strong negotiation skills and the ability to remain calm in contentious situations.
