A Day in the Life
You combine social science research methods with UX research to understand human behaviour, social contexts, and user needs — informing product design, service delivery, and policy decisions.
- Design qualitative research studies (ethnography, contextual inquiry, diary studies)
- Conduct in-depth user interviews and focus groups with diverse participant groups
- Synthesise findings across multiple research studies into rich insight reports
- Collaborate with UX designers and product managers to translate research into design direction
- Apply mixed-methods — combining qualitative depth with quantitative survey data
- Maintain and evolve the research operations practice (participant recruitment, consent, ethics)
- Present research findings to product, engineering, and leadership teams
- Develop empathy maps, personas, journey maps, and experience frameworks
Work Environment
UX or design research team within a technology company, digital agency, or social impact organisation. In Sri Lanka, primarily found at larger tech companies (Sysco LABS, 99x, IronOne) and NGOs conducting social research. Involves frequent user sessions and qualitative fieldwork.
Typical hours: 42h/week · WLB score 8/10 · RARE overtime
Generally good work-life balance. Research follows structured study cycles rather than constant emergency response.
