About This Role
Sets up and operates sound systems, lighting rigs, LED screens, projectors, and stage equipment for events, concerts, and conferences at venues including Nelum Pokuna, BMICH, and SLECC. Technical certification in sound engineering (SAE Institute, local music academies) is valued. High demand during conference season (Oct–March).
A Day in the Life
An Audio-Visual Technician's day involves setting up and testing complex AV equipment for events, troubleshooting technical issues, and operating systems during live performances or presentations. It's a physically demanding role with irregular hours, often requiring quick problem-solving under pressure.
- Transporting, loading, and unloading audio, lighting, and video equipment to event venues
- Setting up and dismantling sound systems, microphones, speakers, and mixing consoles
- Installing and configuring lighting rigs, stage lights, and special effects equipment
- Deploying and testing LED screens, projectors, and video playback systems
- Operating soundboards, lighting consoles, and video switchers during live events
- Performing pre-event checks and troubleshooting technical glitches with AV gear
- Collaborating with event managers, performers, and other technical crew
- Maintaining and repairing AV equipment, ensuring it's in good working order
Work Environment
Works in diverse event venues such as auditoriums, banquet halls, outdoor stages, and conference centers. The environment can be noisy, fast-paced, and physically demanding, often involving lifting heavy equipment, working at heights, and long hours, especially during event days.
